Materials You’ll Need:
- Small drawstring sachet bags or clean fabric squares
- Dried citrus peel (lemon, orange, lime)
- Dried herbs (lavender, mint, rosemary, thyme)
- Cotton balls (optional, for essential oil drops)
- Essential oils (citrus or floral)
- Ribbon or twine for tying
- Small spoon or scoop
Instructions:
- Prepare the Fillings
Lay out bowls of dried citrus peel and herbs. Let the senior choose their favorites by smell. You can also offer essential oil–dotted cotton balls for stronger scents. - Fill the Sachets
Using a spoon or clean hands, place a small amount of dried ingredients into each sachet or fabric square. - Tie or Seal the Pouches
If using fabric, tie it closed securely with twine or ribbon. Drawstring sachets can be pulled tight and double-knotted. - Label or Decorate (Optional)
Add a small tag or sticker with the senior’s name or the scent blend. These also make lovely gifts! - Enjoy & Store
Place the sachets in drawers, closets, under pillows, or simply hold and smell for relaxation. Refresh by squeezing the pouch gently.

Why This Activity Matters
Citrus & Herb Sensory Sachets may seem simple, but they offer a wide range of therapeutic and emotional benefits for older adults. Here’s how this activity supports seniors holistically:
🍊 Aromatherapy-style Relaxation
The refreshing and familiar scents of dried citrus and herbs (like lavender, mint, and rosemary) naturally promote relaxation and stress reduction. These fragrances can uplift mood, ease agitation, and create a soothing environment – especially beneficial for individuals experiencing anxiety, dementia-related restlessness, or general unease.
Fine Motor Engagement
Scooping dried herbs, tying sachets, and arranging materials all encourage the use of fine motor skills. These small, purposeful hand movements help maintain dexterity and coordination – important for everyday tasks like buttoning clothing, eating independently, or writing.
Memory Stimulation
Scent is deeply tied to memory. A whiff of rosemary might bring back memories of Sunday roasts, while citrus peel could remind someone of summer picnics or childhood kitchens. This sensory connection can spark long-forgotten stories, helping seniors reconnect with meaningful moments from their past.
Personal Connection & Storytelling
As each ingredient is selected, there’s an opportunity for conversation. Caregivers and family members can ask questions like “Does this remind you of anything?” or “What was your favourite scent growing up?” These gentle prompts lead to personal storytelling, which builds emotional connection and reduces feelings of isolation.
Tangible Pride
The finished sachet isn’t just an activity – it’s a keepsake. Seniors feel a sense of ownership and accomplishment when they hold a finished product they created with care. Some may choose to gift it to a loved one, which reinforces a sense of purpose and joy.
Even seniors with limited mobility, vision, or cognitive function can take part with a little support. Whether through choosing the scents, feeling the textures, or simply enjoying the aroma, there’s a way for every participant to be included and engaged.
This is care that nourishes the senses, sparks connection, and celebrates the present – one breath at a time.
