Looking for a simple way to blend fun, memory, and fine motor skills? Our DIY Puzzle Challenge is a wonderful hands-on activity that transforms ordinary materials into an engaging game — and a meaningful moment shared between seniors and caregivers.
Whether you’re working with a group or one-on-one, this activity encourages creativity, problem-solving, and lots of laughs along the way.

What You’ll Need
- Large-print photos (family pictures, scenery, or vintage images)
- Cardstock or cardboard backing
- Glue stick
- Scissors (safety scissors if needed)
- Markers or stickers for decorating
How to Make the Puzzle
- Select a Photo
Choose an image that’s personal, colourful, or nostalgic — this helps stimulate memory and emotional connection. Try using past vacation photos, beloved pets, or famous Canadian landmarks. - Mount It
Glue the photo onto a piece of cardboard or sturdy cardstock. Let it dry fully. - Cut Into Puzzle Pieces
Cut the photo into 6–12 simple pieces, depending on the dexterity level of the senior. You can create traditional puzzle shapes or simple squares for easier handling. - Challenge Time!
Mix up the pieces and invite the senior to reassemble the image. Offer hints or work together as a team if needed!
