This activity is designed to be gentle, hands-on, and emotionally enriching for seniors – whether done solo, with a caregiver, or in small groups.
Materials You’ll Need:
- Blank journals or sturdy folded cardstock
- Glue sticks or double-sided tape
- Scissors (optional)
- Nature finds: leaves, flowers, twigs, bark, small feathers
- Colored paper, washi tape, or old magazines (for extra decoration)
- Markers or pens
How to Create a Nature Collage Journal:
- Take a Nature Walk
Head outdoors with your senior client — in the garden, on a patio, or even a walk through the yard. Encourage them to collect fallen natural items that inspire them (leaves, small petals, grass, etc.). - Arrange and Glue
Once inside, open the journal and choose a page. Help arrange the nature items in a way that feels visually pleasing. Then, glue each piece down. - Reflect and Write
Ask them to write (or dictate) a short sentence about what the collage reminds them of — “This leaf reminds me of camping with my family,” or “The colour reminds me of my mom’s garden.” - Decorate Freely
Use washi tape, magazine clippings, or colored paper to add extra flair. Let creativity shine — there’s no right or wrong way! - Repeat as Desired
Each day or week, a new page can be created with new finds – turning the journal into a living summer keepsake.

Why This Activity Matters
Nature Collage Journals are powerful for:
- Enjoying safe outdoor movement and fresh air
- Encouraging mindfulness and grounding
- Supporting memory through sensory exploration
- Providing a space for storytelling, even for non-verbal clients
- Strengthening caregiver-client bonds through shared creativity
Even seniors with cognitive or mobility challenges can participate with gentle assistance – making this activity both inclusive and empowering.
