Materials You’ll Need:
- White cardstock or small wooden craft sticks (for flag base)
- Red construction paper or felt (for stripes and maple leaf)
- Glue sticks or double-sided tape
- Markers or pens
- Optional: stickers, small photos, or printed words like “family,” “freedom,” or “home”
Instructions:
- Build the Flag Base:
Use white cardstock as the flag, or attach a paper rectangle to a wooden stick as a flagpole. - Create the Maple Leaf:
Cut a red maple leaf (use a stencil or trace one) and glue it in the center. - Add Personal Touches:
Around the leaf, encourage seniors to write or draw something they love about Canada — a favourite province, memory, food, or family story. - Decorate & Display:
Add stickers, photos, or small quotes. Display flags around the home or care space to inspire festive spirit!
Canada Day Keepsake Flags offer more than decoration – they:
- Promote cultural pride and personal history
- Stimulate memory and storytelling
- Encourage motor skills through cutting and crafting
- Foster connection with caregivers, family, and fellow residents
It’s an ideal activity for small groups or one-on-one time, especially when paired with Canadian music, trivia, or a patriotic treat like butter tarts!
