In late 2018, the West Island Cancer Wellness Centre (WICWC) applied to Health Canada to proclaim June 26th National Cancer Wellness Awareness Day. The request was approved, and the first National Cancer Wellness Awareness Day was held on June 26, 2019.
What is Cancer Wellness?
Cancer is a life-changing diagnosis that affects not only the physical health of a person but also their mental and emotional well-being. Cancer wellness programs are becoming increasingly popular as they help patients and survivors manage the challenges of cancer and its treatment.
Cancer wellness is a whole-person approach that empowers people living with cancer by addressing their physical, spiritual, emotional, informational, social, systemic, and practical needs. This comprehensive approach can manage cancer well, which complements traditional medicine. In addition to giving individuals a sense of control, Cancer Wellness encourages them to make informed decisions and take concrete steps to improve their health.
Cancer Wellness is also about self-care, which involves understanding and managing stress, developing positive coping strategies, and maintaining healthy relationships. Finally, it is essential to acknowledge all aspects of the cancer experience, including the difficulties, and to recognize the strength and resilience of individuals living with cancer.
Reasons Why Cancer Wellness Programs Are Essential
Physical Benefits
Cancer treatments like chemotherapy, radiation and surgery can be physically draining. Cancer wellness programs help patients manage their symptoms and side effects, such as nausea, fatigue, and pain. Exercise programs designed specifically for cancer patients can also help improve physical strength, flexibility, and overall health.
Emotional Support
Cancer can take a toll on a person's emotional well-being. The fear, anxiety, and stress that come with a cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming. Cancer wellness programs provide emotional support to patients and survivors through counselling, support groups, and other resources. These programs can help alleviate feelings of isolation and provide a sense of community and belonging.
Improved Quality of Life
Cancer wellness programs can help patients and survivors improve their overall quality of life. By addressing physical and emotional needs, these programs can help individuals better manage their symptoms and side effects and reduce stress and anxiety. Improved quality of life can positively affect mental health, relationships, and overall well-being.
Long-Term Health Benefits
Cancer wellness programs can also provide long-term health benefits for patients and survivors. Cancer wellness programs can help reduce the risk of cancer recurrence and other health issues by promoting healthy lifestyle habits, such as regular exercise and a balanced diet. Additionally, these programs can help individuals maintain a positive outlook on life, which can positively impact physical and emotional health.
Cancer wellness programs are an essential part of cancer care. They provide patients and survivors with the tools and resources to manage cancer's physical and emotional challenges. By improving quality of life and promoting long-term health, cancer wellness programs can help individuals live fuller, healthier life after cancer.
