Today is National Bow Tie day! The famous clothing accessory was first used during the Prussian wars when Croatian mercenaries used them to tie their shirt collars shut. The French started using them after making them a style item throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. Most recently, in 2010, bow ties started to "be cool" again when the main character in the new Dr. Who came on screen donning the bow tie. This made sales soar!
