A wonderful way to embrace the outdoors and relish the vibrant hues of the upcoming fall season is to utilize nature's bounty—fallen leaves—for engaging arts and crafts projects! Last week, we collected an assortment of beautiful leaves, and now we can put them to good use in this delightful activity. Not only does this craft promote creativity, but it also offers numerous benefits for our senior loved ones and those in our care.
Crafting with leaves can enhance fine motor skills as seniors manipulate the materials, which is vital for maintaining dexterity. The process of flattening and arranging leaves allows for gentle hand movements, promoting coordination and strength. Additionally, engaging in this activity stimulates cognitive function; following the steps of the craft encourages focus, memory recall, and problem-solving as participants decide how best to design their tiles.
Moreover, this activity serves as a wonderful opportunity for social interaction. Crafting together fosters connection as seniors share stories about their favourite seasons, reminisce about past autumns, or discuss their love for nature. The shared experience can help combat feelings of loneliness and isolation, creating a sense of community and belonging.
Here's what you will need for this enjoyable project:
Fall leaves, preferably dry
Ceramic tiles/coasters approximately 3" x 3"
Mod Podge
Sponge painting brush
A heavy book for "pressing"
Adhesive felt pads
Instructions:
1. Gently place the dry autumn leaves flat inside the pages of a heavy book. Once you close the book, place a heavy object on top, like another book, to help press the leaves flat enough that they won’t curl when placed on the coaster tile.
2. Once dry and flattened, carefully remove the leaves from the book pages and set them aside.
3. Using the Mod Podge, which can be found at most craft/DIY stores, apply a thin layer using the sponge brush onto the ceramic tile (available at any hardware/DIY store).
4. While still wet from the Mod Podge, gently arrange your first leaf onto the tile. Place a thick layer of Mod Podge over the leaf.
5. You may repeat Step 4 by adding layers of leaves onto your tile, always remembering to cover it with more Mod Podge to adhere securely.
6. Once complete and all of your layers are dried, add one final coat of Mod Podge to the entire tile and let it dry. This will provide a nice clear, shiny surface once dried.
7. When your tile is dried and ready to use, adhere the felt pads to the bottom corners of your tile to keep it from scratching or scuffing any tabletop surfaces.
By integrating this leaf-themed arts and crafts activity into our fall programming, we celebrate the beauty of nature and promote wellness and joy among our senior participants. Let’s gather together, create, and make lasting memories this autumn season!
