Happy Earth Day! Today marks the 51st annual Earth Day. First introduced in 1970 when millions of Americans stood in protest for better environmental protections. The day was not made popular worldwide until 20 years later when people globally united and began organizing and fighting for climate protections across 141 countries.

5 Earth Day Activities for Seniors & Caregivers
Depending on the needs and mobility concerns of each individual, choose one or more of the following activities to do on your own, as a family or as a home-care community!
Plant a Tree or Grow your own Vegetables
If there is an area within your facility's or home's yard space, consider planting a tree! There may be some options at your local tree nursery, such as pine tree seedlings. Another idea may be to plant flower or vegetable seeds in a small clay pot for each family member or resident in care! Paint or decorate the pot, add some soil and seeds, and tend to your own mini garden!
Reusable Water Bottles & Bags
Many of us may already be reducing the world's plastics by replacing plastic water bottles with reusable bottles made from metals or choosing paper or fabric reusable bags for our groceries. These options are a great way to help the world's oceans and waterways from harmful plastics that can endanger species and the water supply.
Birds in the Backyard
Want to view the beauty of birds and hear their songs in your backyard? Why not build, decorate, or purchase a bird feeder or birdhouse!? A great option to bring nature closer while helping them out with food and shelter during the warmer months!
Walking with Purpose
Enjoy nature's bounty by taking a stroll through your neighbourhood or community park. Bring along a pair of binoculars for some bird watching or even a few garbage bags to pick up litter along the way! A great way to get active socialize with family and friends, and help the Earth at the same time!
Indoor activities
Spring weather can be a challenge and so too can mobility concerns for many seniors. That's why opting for indoor activities, such as planting flowers in small pots, designing a kite to fly later on, or colouring fun pictures for Earth Day, like the ones below! These activities can be just as helpful to socialize, maintain emotional and physical wellbeing and feel part of the global community of helpers!
