DIY winter snow globe with lights

Why not bring that enchantment into your home this holiday season by creating your own snow globe? Not only is this craft a delightful way to celebrate the spirit of winter, but it also offers a multitude of benefits, especially for seniors. Engaging in this hands-on activity fosters creativity, enhances fine motor skills, and cultivates social connections, all while evoking cherished memories. Let’s embark on this magical journey together, where creativity meets nostalgia!

Materials

  • Mason jar or any clear glass or plastic jar with a secure lid.

  • Hot glue or strong crafter's glue

  • Miniature objects, such as trees, characters, holiday bells, gifts, etc.

  • Fake snow, glitter, or sequins

  • Water *optional

  • 1/2 tsp Glycerine *optional

Instructions

1. Remove the lid from the jar and turn it upside down.

2. Using glue and miniature objects, glue a holiday or wintery scene to the inside middle of the lid. Set aside and let dry. Another option would be to set the items inside the jar itself and secure them to the bottom with tape or glue.

3. Cover the bottom of the jar with fake snow, glitter, or sequins, making sure not to add too much, as we don't want it to cover the scenery when put together.

4. If you are choosing to add water and glycerin for a more authentic snow globe, put 1/2 tsp of glycerin into the jar and fill the jar with water.

5. Finally, turn the lid over and screw it back onto the jar and secure it.

6. When you're ready for the magic, turn your snow globe upside down so that it rests on its lid and watch the scene come to life as the snow falls gently on your holiday scene!

Tip: Add battery or solar-operated string lights inside the jar to create a night light option instead!

Benefits for Seniors

Creating a snow globe can offer numerous benefits for seniors, enhancing both their physical and mental well-being:

Cognitive Engagement: The activity stimulates creativity and encourages problem-solving as seniors decide on their miniature scenes and how to arrange them within the globe. This can help keep their minds sharp and engaged.

Fine Motor Skills: Assembling the snow globe involves various fine motor tasks, such as gluing and handling small objects, which can help maintain and improve dexterity and hand-eye coordination.

Emotional Well-Being: Crafting can be a therapeutic activity that reduces stress and anxiety. The nostalgic element of creating a snow globe can evoke happy memories and promote positive feelings, especially during the holiday season.

Social Interaction: This project can be a wonderful group activity. Seniors can gather to share materials, ideas, and stories, fostering social connections and reducing feelings of isolation.

Sense of Accomplishment: Completing a craft project instills a sense of pride and achievement. Seeing the finished snow globe can enhance self-esteem and remind them of their creativity.

Sensory Stimulation: The textures of the materials, the visual appeal of the scene, and the act of shaking the globe provide sensory experiences that can be enjoyable and stimulating for seniors.

Memory Making: Creating and displaying a personalized snow globe can serve as a cherished keepsake, evoking memories and stories that can be shared with family and friends during gatherings.

Overall, making a snow globe is not just a fun holiday project; it is an enriching experience that offers seniors an opportunity to engage their minds, improve their skills, and connect with others.
